In recent days, a virus has attacked computer systems all over the globe, crippling over 200,000 computers in more than 150 countries. Although the attacks were most prevalent overseas, the threat to computers in the U.S. is still strong.
The virus is a type of ransomware, which locks people out of their computer files until they pay a ransom to hackers. This particular virus, called WannaCry, is of special concern because it targets hospitals and healthcare facilities around the world.

How You Can Protect Yourself
The virus uses a weakness in Microsoft’s Windows operating system to infect computers. On Friday, Microsoft took the unusual step of providing a security update to protect Windows platforms that are in custom support, including Windows XP, Windows 8 and Windows Server 2003. Thus far, customers running Windows 10 have not been targeted by the attack.
