COVID-19 Information for Cancer Patients and Caregivers
We understand that you have questions about coronavirus and what it means for you. People with cancer and other chronic medical conditions, people in active cancer treatment and older individuals are considered higher risk for the more severe form of COVID-19.
It’s Safe to Get Cancer Treatment
While it’s important to avoid crowded facilities, it’s safe to come to a small clinic like ours to maintain your oncology and hematology treatment. Procedures are always in place to protect your health, and we have expanded these efforts. Here’s what you can expect:
Masks are required in the clinic. You are welcome to take a handmade fabric mask while supplies last.
You have access to hand sanitizer at the front desk and in treatment rooms.
For over a year, we’ve had air purifiers with UV-C light in the clinic; we also have the carpets cleaned regularly.
Before treatment begins, we check the temperature of every patient. If your temperature is higher than expected, you’ll be evaluated by a care provider and, if warranted, tested for COVID-19. (Test kits will only be used when needed to rule out coronavirus.) In accordance with state law, test results will be sent to the Iowa Department of Public Health.
To increase the safety of our patients, all staff members have been tested for coronavirus. All tests have been negative. We plan to screen all staff for coronavirus once per month, even when no symptoms are present.
After every treatment session, equipment, chairs and the surrounding area are cleaned with special wipes. A cleaning protocol is in place to sanitize bathrooms, frequently touched surfaces and all areas of the clinic.
Family members and caregivers will be asked to stay in the waiting area or family room during your visit. If your caregiver isn’t feeling well, we ask that they drop you off and not come into the office. If you’d like us to take their temperature, just ask at the front desk.
We are rescheduling appointments for follow-up patients who aren’t in active treatment.
